What about confidentiality in therapy?

My profession and professional ethics require me to keep everything we discuss in the strictest confidence. Your information is kept securely. Information is only released with your informed, voluntary and written consent. There are a few exceptions to this rule:

  • When I assess you may be a danger to yourself or others.
  • If I suspect child abuse or neglect.
  • If records are subpoenaed to court.

How many sessions will I need?

A  commitment to therapy is essential if you want to make positive changes to yourself, your relationship and/or your life. Appointments are scheduled based on your expressed need.

Will I ever get better?

I cannot promise for certain that you will get better. What I can say is that engaging in counselling has been helpful for people.

Every person is different and at a different place in their life and level of readiness for change, growth and challenge. Therapy can be a long, challenging process. You may find that you feel worse before you feel better, as you work through old wounds or difficult feelings or aspects of yourself or your life that you’d rather just forget or ignore.

Should I come alone or with my partner?

For individual therapy, you should come alone. There may be circumstances where we agree that, for a session or two, it would be helpful for your partner/family member to join us, but this would usually be for a limited time.

For couple’s therapy it is beneficial if both people are present for the sessions.

For sessions for parents seeking support for their children, it is most beneficial at first, if parent(s)/ caregiver(s) are present with the child in the session. It can be determined after the initial session who should be present for subsequent sessions.

What should I expect from a therapist?

You can expect that I will be non-judgmental and supportive. I will guide your therapy but not tell you what to do.
